A new analysis of the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” suggests that the left should be embracing the plan, not fearing it, due to its aggressive support of Ukraine, Israel, and other neoliberal foreign policy goals.
- While the document outlines some Conservative domestic policies, many of Project 2025’s national security and foreign policy recommendations align closely with the current bipartisan consensus.
- A deeper look into the plan reveals it seeks to boost the military-industrial complex to expand the nuclear arsenal and “counter” China. The study asserts that strategies like these are already well underway with the incumbent Biden administration.
- The plan also seeks to provide military aid to Ukraine, reorganize and empower US intelligence agencies (who often target perceived foes of neoliberalism), increase arms sales abroad, and emphasize support for the state of Israel—which many Democrat politicians already cheer.
The big picture: While Democrats have come out to broadly denounce the plan as a “fascistic” scheme to crack down on civil liberties, the report alleges that the fearmongering could be a cheap trick to motivate voters to vote against Trump on Election day.
- The 920-page plan is being labeled as a “dangerous roadmap” for a potential second Trump administration. Despite this, Trump has distanced himself from Project 2025 twice in recent weeks.
- The study suggests many of the document’s “fearsome” proposals are already being soundly implemented or supported by the Biden administration and congressional Democrats.
- While Project 2025 represents mainstream conservative priorities, it’s far from a radical departure from current policies that Democrats are alleging. Evidence of this hysteria can already be found on social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook, which some believe could be heavily astroturfed by paid partisan actors.
The conversation: Independent journalist Michael Tracey, who penned the report, suggested that the only thing to fear about Project 2025 is the grim state of the current two-party system that effectively has the same goals.
- “Project 2025 is a joke. Ignore the liberals’ hysteria, as they just need another excuse to ignite their ten millionth fruitless Trump Panic. Also ignore the self-styled ‘anti-establishment’ right-wingers who are trying to hype this thing as so great and ‘based,’ said Tracey in a post to X, formerly Twitter.
- “They want to explode military spending beyond its current record highs. They want to further *empower* the so-called ‘Deep State,’ not shackle it. Yes, there’s reason to “fear” Project 2025. But only insofar as it’s a reflection of the same bipartisan consensus that’s currently hurtling the world into catastrophe,” he continued.
- Some opponents of Project 2025 have pointed to its desire to abolish the Department of Education as an imminently dangerous “fascist” policy. However, Tracey argues that this was the position of former President Ronald Reagan, who campaigned on the issue but never actualized it.
