Human rights group attacks El Salvador’s effective gang crackdown

According to a new report by the “human rights” group, Cristosal, at least 261 suspected criminals have died in Salvadorian prisons since the start of President Nayib Bukele’s successful anti-gang crackdown campaign.

  • According to the report, there have been 261 total deaths in prisons since the crackdown began in 2022, with 88 deaths said to have stemmed from “criminal acts.”
  • An additional 87 have died due to alleged “illnesses,” 14 from acts of prison violence, and another 72 with no immediately identifiable cause.
  • In total, 81,110 gang criminals have been removed from polite society since Bukele took office and won his second term in February.
  • Despite concerns constantly being aired by international human rights groups over the leader’s fascistic criminal justice policies, the duly-elected leader has conformed to the rule of law and has actually released over 7000 people due to a lack of incriminating evidence.

Why it matters: Bukele’s law and order campaign has made the nation of El Salvador one of the safest places in the Western Hemisphere, outpacing modern 1st world countries like the United States and Canada.

  • Unlike El Salvador’s Western counterparts, Nayib Bukele’s nationalist policies have earned him a whopping 94% approval rating with the people, who now enjoy one of the lowest homicide rates on the planet.
  • In 2015, years before Bukele’s ascension to power, wanton gang criminality led to a homicide rate of 18.4%, with a staggering 6,656 total homicides. By 2023, the homicide rate plummeted to 0.42%, with only 154 homicides nationwide.
  • According to the White-Papers Policy Institute, Bukele’s success is a result of his pivot towards illiberal governing policies, which include a widely successful military-style Territorial Control Plan, which led to the recapture of 80% of the country from powerful criminal gangs.

Zooming out: Mass arrests of gang criminals—many of which were apprehended for having gang tattoos or confirmed family relations with criminals—is evidence that profiling suspects based on their physical traits is an effective law enforcement policy that has led to an objectively safer and better society for all involved.
