New York City experiences ‘rape surge’

A damning report by the New York Post is sounding the alarm after data sourced from the NYPD confirmed a surge of rape cases across the Big Apple.

  • According to law enforcement, New York City has seen a staggering 11% increase in reported rapes this year, with some areas experiencing more than double compared to the same period last year.
  • In total, 880 rapes were reported citywide from Jan. 1 through July 14, 2024. This number would be up from 796 in the same period in 2023.
  • Experts are pointing to several potential factors driving this abhorrent trend, namely a surge in the migrant population, anti-White bail-reform policies, liberal prosecutors like Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg, and dwindling NYPD manpower.

Added context: While crime across New York City has often fluctuated throughout the years, the report was able to pinpoint specific trouble areas where rapes have seen a documented uptick.

  • Manhattan’s 10th Precinct, which includes Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen South, and Hudson Yards, has seen a 300% increase since last year.
  • Midtown South Precinct, which includes the city’s iconic Times Square, has seen a 111% increase.
  • The 101st Precinct on Rockaway Peninsula, Queens, saw a 100% increase, while the 105th Precinct in Eastern Queens saw a 70% increase.

The conversation: Officials claim that in many instances, rapes are carried out by people known to the victims, but so-called “stranger rapes” are increasingly common.

  • “It’s no secret that the NYPD is down significantly in terms of force size. Because it’s down, whenever it decides to prioritize something—say for example subway offenses—that’s going to make the topside slightly more vulnerable, as far as more cops are now below ground,” said criminal justice policy expert Rafael Mangual to the NYP.
  • “This should be a wake up call,” said Jane Manning, director of Women’s Equal Justice, who called for more investigators in the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit.

In the headlines: While the NYPD states they will “vigorously investigate every single rape complaint,” a laundry list of sexual assaults appears to have permanently marred the city.

  • In May, a Black man in the Bronx was arrested for lassoing a woman with a belt and dragging her in between two parked cars to rape her, reports say. The individual, Kashaan Parks, was said to have potentially done it before.
  • In June, Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, was arrested for the brutal rape of a 13-year-old girl in Queens. The victim’s father would later go on to attack President Biden for ineffectual border policies, which let the suspect in.
